The earliest traces of the game go back to the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). A hand game called "shoushiling" is one of the first hand-gesture contests mentioned in Chinese sources. It wasn't as standardized as today, but the core idea was the same: use hand shapes to decide an outcome.

Japan and "jan-ken"

When the game reached Japan it became known as jan-ken (じゃんけん) and settled into the rock–paper–scissors trio we know today. Spreading to the West

Why is it so successful?

The cyclic balance of three options makes the game perfect: rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock. No option is absolutely superior to another. That symmetry makes it a rare design that fascinates children and game theorists alike.

Yes, it really has professional tournaments. In world championships held over the years, players competed using strategy, bluffing, and psychology. Those tournaments are the best proof that the game isn't "just luck."
